This Orange Day, 25 Octoberr 2017, the UNiTE Campaign will put a spotlight on the issue of Violence against Women living in Rural Communities.
Violence affects all groups of women and girls, regardless of income, age, or education. Women and girls living in rural areas face different risks to violence and challenges in responding.
Yet, it is not living in rural areas as such that places women and girls at greater risk of violence but rather their underserved nature – including high levels of poverty, lower access to high education, decent work, economic empowerment, and social protection – that increase their risk of being subject to violence and difficulties to leave an abusive relationship.
One of the main issues to be highlighted around violence against rural women is that services for survivors are not easily accessible and available for women from rural areas: “Public services often fail to respond to the needs and challenges of rural women. In many parts of the world, women are constrained by physical distances, poor transport infrastructure, concerns for physical safety, and cultural norms that limit women’s mobility or discourage women from entering the public sphere. In situations of domestic violence, for example, a lack of available childcare or employment opportunities can exacerbate women’s lack of access to basic support services such as police protection, safe accommodation, health care, and legal assistance, which further compounds their psychosocial isolation.” 1
Among the 169 targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development are three that specifically focus on eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls, eliminating harmful practices, and reducing all forms of violence. Realizing gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls will make a crucial contribution to progress across all the 17 Goals and targets. Any measure taken to achieve these targets and eliminate all forms of violence against ALL women and girls must include those living in rural communities.

This Orange Day, 25 September 2017, the UNiTE Campaign focuses on Violence against Older women.
For this Orange Day, 25 September 2017, the UNiTE Campaign has teamed up with AARP to put a spotlight on the issue of Violence against Older Women, recognizing that women remain at risk for violence throughout their lives.
Physical, sexual and psychological violence, financial exploitation, neglect and other forms of violence against older women are widespread yet mostly hidden. It occurs in multiple, oftenintersecting forms by varying perpetrators, including intimate partners or spouses, family members, caregivers (both in and outside of institutional settings), or members of their community. 1
Older women face a greater risk of physical and psychological abuse than older men due to discriminatory societal attitudes and the non-realization of the human rights of women. Despite policies and programmes adopted by many countries at the national level, reports of incidents of violence against older women have grown at an alarming rate.2 Some harmful traditional and customary practices, such as the denial of land inheritance rights to widows 3, result in abuse and violence directed at older women, often exacerbated by poverty and lack of access to legal protection. 4 Recent findings5 draw specific attention to incidents of violence and murder of older women following accusations of witchcraft acts embedded in customs and social structures that render older women as targets of their own families and communities. In many countries, institutions established to provide care for older women and men are not managed properly and low standards of care go unchecked. 6
A major challenge in addressing violence against older women is the lack of reliable, comprehensive data, particularly in vulnerable settings, such as conflict areas or disaster zones, or from marginalized populations, such as immigrant and refugee older women, older women with disabilities, indigenous older women, LBT older women, and others. One of the few prevalence studies to focus on violence and abuse against older women was conducted in five European Union countries. Results of this study showed that 28% of older women reported experiencing some form of abuse in the previous year (neglect, emotional, financial, physical, sexual, and/or “violation of rights”). Emotional abuse was the highest-reported category, with 24% reporting this type of abuse in the home in the previous 12 months. 7
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its commitment to leave no one behind holds promise for greater inclusion of older women. However, this can only be achieved through extending data collection on women subjected to physical and/or sexual violence from the upper age limit of 49 years, which stems from a traditional focus on women in reproductive age, to the age 50 and beyond. Regardless of their age, all women are entitled to a life free from violence and its consequences. Any measure taken to achieve Goal 5 and eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls must include older women—this means including older women in prevention, response, and data collection efforts to monitor prevalence and progress on relevant Goal 5 targets and indicators.

This Orange Day, 25 June 2017, the UNiTE Campaign focuses on Violence against Refugee Women and Girls.
50 per cent of the world’s refugees are women and girls 1. They face specific challenges and protection risks in transit, including family separation, psychosocial stress and trauma, health complications, particularly for pregnant women, physical harm and injury, and risks of exploitation and gender-based violence. An estimated one in five refugees or displaced women in complex humanitarian settings have experienced sexual violence—likely an underestimation given the barriers associated with disclosure2.
Many of these women are fleeing conflict in their homeland and have suffered extreme violence and human rights violations, including the killing and disappearance of family members, sexual and gender based violence, and disrupted access to food, water, and electricity. Some have been repeatedly displaced or have been exploited or abused while attempting to seek asylum. Women are also often the main caretakers for children and elderly family members, further deepening their need for protection and support3. With limited economic opportunities, their options to build a livelihood are often limited to lowpaid informal work which increases their risk to be put in a position where the only option is having to engage in transactional sex.
At least 10 of the 169 targets of 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development include references to issues directly pertaining to international migration, migrants, and mobility4. All UN Member States are called upon to facilitate the safe, orderly, and regular migration and mobility of people, including through the implementation of planned migration policies. Any measure taken to achieve Goal 5 and eliminate all forms of violence against ALL women and girls must include women and girls who are refugee and migrant.
